Epic Games, the developer of the popular battle royale game Fortnite, is enhancing its anti-cheat mechanisms by mandating additional hardware security features for PC players. This change, effective February 19, aims to create a more secure and fair gaming environment by leveraging advanced system-level protections. Players will soon need to ensure that Secure Boot, Trusted Platform Module (TPM), and Input-Output Memory Management Unit (IOMMU) are enabled on their systems, a move that parallels the security requirements seen in other competitive titles.

Fortnite's Enhanced Anti-Cheat Protocol Details

In a significant update scheduled for February 19, Epic Games will require all PC players participating in Fortnite tournaments to activate three core security features: Secure Boot, TPM, and IOMMU. These technologies are integral to modern computing and are largely present in systems compatible with Windows 11. Epic Games reassures players that approximately 95% of the current Fortnite PC player base likely already meets these specifications, though some may need to adjust their BIOS settings to enable them.

IOMMU, an input-output memory management unit, plays a crucial role in regulating how hardware devices access system memory. It effectively maps virtual addresses to physical ones, serving as a critical barrier against unauthorized device access to the system before the operating system even fully loads. This prevents malicious devices, such as those used for cheating, from compromising game memory. While IOMMU has seen recent discussion regarding potential vulnerabilities and subsequent BIOS updates from manufacturers like Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, and ASRock, its inclusion in Fortnite's anti-cheat strategy signifies a stronger stance against memory-based exploits.
