Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater Drives Franchise Sales Past 65 Million Units
Konami has successfully revitalized the Metal Gear franchise, which had seen a period of dormancy following the departure of its original creator, Hideo Kojima. After a five-year hiatus from major releases, excluding the less favorably received Metal Gear Survive, the launch of the Master Collection Vol. 1 in 2023 marked a return. However, it was the subsequent release of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, a faithful remake of a fan-favorite, that truly tested the waters, proving Konami's ongoing capability to produce high-quality entries in the series.
The impact of Metal Gear Solid Delta is evident in the franchise's updated sales figures. Konami's corporate website now reports a cumulative total of 65.5 million units sold for the Metal Gear series. While Metal Gear Solid Delta alone isn't solely responsible for the entire 2.2 million unit increase since June 2025, it is the primary contributor, indicating sales of approximately two million units or slightly less for the remake. This performance is particularly noteworthy given it's a remake of an older title that many fans have already experienced, suggesting a strong potential for future installments if Konami continues this trajectory.
Beyond Metal Gear, Konami has achieved considerable success with other intellectual properties. The eFootball series, previously known as Pro Evolution Soccer, boasts an astounding 950 million downloads across platforms, including mobile. Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Links has also seen massive popularity with 150 million downloads. Additionally, games like Pawafuru Puroyakyu (Power Pros in the West) and Momotaro Dentetsu have sold 26.3 million and 19.9 million copies respectively, alongside Silent Hill contributing 14 million units. Konami has also outlined future plans to integrate emerging technologies such as AI, 5G/6G, cloud computing, WEB3, NFTs, and VR/AR into its gaming development, signaling a forward-looking approach to innovation.
The renewed success of the Metal Gear series, spearheaded by Metal Gear Solid Delta, highlights the enduring appeal of classic game franchises and the potential for expertly crafted remakes to captivate both long-time fans and new audiences. This resurgence serves as an inspiring example of how dedication to quality and strategic innovation can breathe new life into beloved titles, reaffirming their place in the gaming world and encouraging a positive outlook for the industry's future.
